Unconventional gas and oil production exploration and production operations have gained significant momentum in the US and are spreading to other countries and continents after measurable success of the US operations. Effectively dealing with technical and environmental challenges is essential for the sustainability of unconventional operations in unlocking the vast reserves to supply the global energy need. This workshop will bring together experts from the energy industry, academia and federal and state government organizations to discuss technical, environmental and economic issues and challenges, debate recent advancements in geomechanics disciplines to overcome these challenges, and share field case studies to spread our knowledge in this, our third annual workshop.

ARMA and the ISRM Petroleum Geomechanics Commission invite you to the 2nd Workshop on Petroleum Geomechanics Testing. This full-day workshop will be held on Saturday, 22 June 2013 in San Francisco, just prior to the 47th U.S. Rock Mechanics / Geomechanics Symposium.
The 1st workshop, held June 2012 in Chicago, touched on the following topics: core damage, sampling protocols, best practice testing methods, special testing situations, index testing, and analogue materials. This second workshop will focus on rock physics, both acoustic measurement techniques themselves as well as the relation of acoustics to parameters such as strength, moduli, heterogeneity, damage, anisotropy, etc.
A second area of likely focus will be procedures for uniaxial-strain compressibility testing. Guidelines for this test are being put together by a new ISRM working group. Depending on the status as of June 2013, this session will consist either of a report-out from the working group, or contributory talks related to this test procedure.

This workshop is part of the work of the ISRM Commission on Spall Prediction, the purposes of which are to develop suggested methods for damage initiation threshold detection; and to provide general guidance for the use of these thresholds in empirical, analytical and numerical prediction of ground behaviour in brittle rock masses at depth. The workshop will include guest presentations by international experts and will include significant question and discussion time for each speaker and for the general themes of general mechanics, laboratory testing, analysis methods, geological factors, applications and limitations.
Please join us in San Francisco for a lively discussion. Further information can be obtained from Mark Diederichs: mdiederi@geol.queensu.ca
