Title: Workshop on Digital Rock Physics Derived Rock Mechanics Properties
Date: Sunday, 28 June 2015, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
Venue: The Westin St. Francis, San Francisco
Cost: $150 Lunch included
Organized by: American Rock Mechanics Association and the Society of Core Analysts, a chapter of SPWLA
This one-day workshop will address the question: can Digital Rock Physics (DRP) derive relevant rock mechanical properties? If not what advances are required to predict? We may not have all the answers, but, as a group, we hope to distill and discuss the current state of knowledge on the topic. ARMA has teamed with the Society of Core Analysts for this year’s workshop. The core analyst community has a wealth of experience with employing digital rock physics measurements and modeling to predict reservoir rock properties such as electrical, permeability, and multiphase flow properties. Results from the simultaneous measurement of rock compaction while micro-CT imaging will be presented.
Key topics include: micro-CT imaging and modeling to predict acoustic velocities, bulk modulus, and compressibility. Other topics include:
- How do DRP predictions of rock mechanical properties compare to measured values?
- How does one scale up measurements and modeling on small samples (sample volume of less than 1cc)?
- Can DRP predict mechanical properties at stress and temperature conditions that are difficult to reproduce in the lab?
- What information can nano-CT imaging of shales provide as to mechanical properties?

Title: Workshop on How to Give an Effective and Engaging Presentation
Date: Sunday, 28 June 2015, 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Venue: The Westin St. Francis, San Francisco
Cost: Free (Attendance may be limited)
Organized by: The Future Leaders of the American Rock Mechanics Association
This workshop is open to all symposium participants, especially interested students, to learn the Do’s and Don’ts of giving an effective and engaging presentation. The workshop will include how to structure and deliver a presentation, staying on topic. Participants will be given to chance to critique a real presentation. The aim of the workshop is to provide helpful hints on how to improve one’s communication and presentation skills as well as the content included on each slide.
